About Resource Rules

A resource is a characteristic of a product or feature that can be consumed or supplied by the product or feature's options. For example, a car product might need a fixed resource for trunk space. The resource has a minimum and a maximum and every configuration of the car product must not exceed these values. The resource also has an initial value, which is the amount of space available for default or standard configuration for the car.

The following example makes this clearer:

Options available for the car can use up (increment) or add to (decrement) the amount of available trunk space. For example, a spare tire might decrement the space by 1, but the Sedan body style might increment the space by 2. Other options, such as power steering, have no affect on trunk space and would not be assigned resource usage.
