About Logical Features

Logical features and manufacturing features are part of the logical product structure in a product hierarchy. While each logical feature can belong to either the logical structure or the manufacturing structure of a product, a manufacturing feature can only belong to the manufacturing structure.

Logical features define the framework used to generate the Engineering Bill of Materials (EBOM) for a product configuration. Logical features further define the feature structure and can have one or more parts associated with them. The associated parts represent configurability. Logical features can also have subfeatures that have options in them. Subfeatures can be logical features or manufacturing features.

Logical Feature Policy Definition

The Logical Feature policy governs the logical feature type and all of its subtypes. Logical features can be in any of the following states:

  • Preliminary—This state defines the initial condition for a logical feature object. Users with a Product Manager or System Engineer role are most likely to define the logical feature composition while it is in this state.
  • Review—Logical features are promoted to this state upon initial composition definition. You can deploy route-controlled review mechanisms to track the completeness of the definition and use the change control process to release the logical feature. The Responsible Design Organization (RDO) governs all role definitions in this state, and role definitions have RDO filters in their policy.
  • Release—Logical features are promoted to this state using the change control behavior of the Engineering Change object. It is not possible to manually promote or demote from this state, which is considered a frozen state for the logical feature. It is also not possible to make any change to the composition of a logical feature when it is in this state; however, it is still possible to define a GBOM. The logical feature is not governed by the RDO when it is in this state.
  • Obsolete—Logical features are promoted to this state using the change control behavior of the Engineering Change object. It is not possible to manually promote or demote from this state, which is considered a frozen state for the logical feature. It is also not possible to make any change to the composition of a logical feature when it is in this state. The logical feature is not governed by the RDO when it is in this state.
