Creating New Objects: Structure & Content Editor

You can create new objects at any level in the specification. Select a location and choose "Create New" from the Actions menu to define a new Chapter, Comment, or Requirement. The actual placement of the new object may vary from the selected location due to the rules governing object placement. In addition, a specification reserved by another user has inherent editing restrictions that will prevent you from creating new objects.

You cannot create new objects if the specification is reserved by another user. Use the View filter's Status option to show any restrictions. For instructions, see View and Display Options: Structure & Content Editor.

  1. From the navigation tree, check an object.

    The selected object establishes the insertion point for the new object.

  2. Click Actions > Create New > Chapter, Comment, or Requirement.

    The Create New Chapter, Comments, or Requirements page opens.

  3. Enter these details for the new object:

    Common fields for Requirement, Comment, and Chapter pages:

    Name or AutoName. Type a name or check AutoName to assign a name automatically.

    Type. Click to select a type. Default types are Chapter, Comment, and Requirement.

    Vault. Click to select a storage location.

    Revision. The revision code.

    Description. Details about the new object.

    Owner. Click to select an owner.

    Design Responsibility. Click to assign design responsibility.

    Priority. From the drop-down list, select Pre-assigned, Medium, Low, High, or Urgent.

    Requirement Only page fields:

    Title. Enter the descriptive identifier for the Requirement.

    Difficulty. From the drop-down list, select High, Medium, or Low.

    Sponsoring Customer. Click to select a customer.

    Requirement Classification. From the drop-down list, select: None, Functional, Non-Functional, Constraint.

    Estimated Cost. The estimated cost.

    Synopsis. A brief description of the overall requirement.

    Notes. Any notes regarding the requirement, as needed.

    Policy. From the drop-down list, select Requirement.

  4. Click Done to insert the new object.

    The Structure & Content Editor page is refreshed to show the new object.

    If you create a new object in a filtered view, it appears in the view regardless of whether it meets the filter criteria or not. Refresh the page to reapply the filters.
