Editing Product Configuration Properties

Product Managers and Design Engineers with modify access can make changes to the product configurations.

When a standard product configuration (that is, the value of the attribute Sales Intent is "Standard"), the Start Sales Effectivity and End Sales Effectivity become important. The Product Manager must define when the product is available for order and when it is no longer available. A standard product configuration is effective when it has a Start Sales Effectivity date that is equal to or greater than current date.

Before you begin: Access the Product Configurations page. For details, see Viewing Product Configurations.

About Validating Product Configurations
  1. To edit a product configuration's properties, do one of the following:

    • Click in the Edit column.
    • Click the Name of the product configuration or click to view the Properties page, then click Edit Details from the page Actions menu.

Note: The frame on the left always displays the name of the "based-on" product, the marketing text of the product, and the image of the product, if one is specified.

  2. Make modifications, as necessary. The following can be changed:

Name. Name of the product configuration.

Top Level Part. Click and select Top Level Part to select the part that is the top level part for the product configuration. The top level part is the context for the product configuration and can be any part. If you do not assign a top level part, a new part can be created from the context part family and assigned as the top level part. The Search page opens. The criteria for creating a top level part are as follows:

    • The part policy should be Development Part and it should not be in the Obsolete state.
    • The part should not be connected to other parts with an EBOM relationship.
    • The part should not be connected to other product configurations as a top level part.

Note: With regard to the BOM generation process, if you do not assign a top level part while editing a Product Configuration, one is automatically created and assigned to the Product Configuration when the EBOM is generated from the Preview BOM page. The prerequisite for this to occur is that in the context in which the Product Configuration is present, a Part Family must also be present in that context's GBOM. For example, if a Product Configuration is present in the Hardware Product context, then in the Hardware Product's GBOM a Part Family should also be present.

Description. You can add details to the product configuration description or replace the existing description.

Marketing Name. Marketing name of the product configuration.

Marketing Text. Marketing text of the product configuration.

Owner. Owner of the product configuration.

    Purpose. Select one:

    • Evaluation (default). for internal engineering, for example, to test configuration rules.
    • Order. for sale to customers.

Sales Intent. Either of the following:

    • Standard (can be sold in the market and appears in a product catalog)
    • Custom (sold to one customer and is not available in the product catalog)

End Sales Effectivity. Release date of the next product configuration in the future release list. If the End Sales Effectivity date is left blank and a Start Sales Effectivity is entered, this means that the product configuration is available for sale and it has no end-of-life.

Start Sales Effectivity. Release date of the product configuration. A Start Sales Effectivity date can be entered without an End Sales Effectivity date.

List Price. Price listed for the product configuration.

  3. Click Done.
