Creating a Rule Extension

This task shows you how to create a new rule extension. New rule extensions can be created before the product line, product, feature or model reaches either the Release or Obsolete state. Once the Release or Obsolete state is reached, it must be revised before additional rules can be defined.

Before you begin: Access the Rule Extensions page for an object. For details, see Viewing Rule Extensions.
  1. To create a new rule extension, from the page Actions menu, select Create.

The Create New Rule Extension page opens.

  2. Type details, as necessary. The following can be defined:

    Field Description
Name Type the name of the new rule extension.
Program Click to select a program or type the name of the program that defines the new rule extension.
Argument Type the arguments to be passed into the selected program.
Comments Type comments to help anyone reviewing or using the rule extension.
Mandatory Select Yes or No. Features and rules can be defined as mandatory or non-mandatory. A feature or rule that is mandatory is inherited by all lower level models and products. Mandatory features and rules are maintained at the product line level and promote product consistency.
Rule Classification Select the rule type: Configuration, Logical, or Manufacturing
Design Responsibility Click to assign the organization or project that has design responsibility for the rule. By default, the design responsibility is populated with the design responsibility associated with the object in context. See Assigning Design Responsibility.
Vault Click to specify where the rule information will be stored in the database. By default, the vault is the assigned default vault.

  3. Click Done to save your changes.
