Creating New General Class Objects

Librarians can create general class objects under General Libraries and under other classes. You can create any number of subclasses at any level of a class hierarchy.

In addition, you can attach existing orphaned class objects to class objects. You can also use this procedure to create a subclass within a class.

Before you begin: View the list of classes in the general library, class, or subclass where you want to create the new class. See Library Classes and Subclasses Lists or Classified Items List.

  1. Select Create New from the page Actions menu or toolbar.

You can also open this dialog box by selecting > Library > Create Class > Create General Class from the global toolbar.

  2. Enter these details for the new general class:

    Field Name Description
Type To create a Document Family or Part Family, click and select the type. If you select another object type, Library Central refreshes the page and displays fields appropriate to that type.
Name Names are case-sensitive and spaces are allowed. You can use complete names rather than contractions, making the terminology in your system easier for people to understand. Name lengths can be a maximum of 127 characters. Leading and trailing spaces are ignored.
    Title Type a brief title.
Description A brief description for the class (more detailed than the title).
Policy Select a policy from the drop-down list. Your system might only have a single policy available.
Owner To select a user other than yourself to own this class, click and select a different person or start typing the name and select from a list of matches.
Notify To select users to be notified that this class has been created, click and select the user names.
Message You can edit the default message as needed.
Create In If you started this procedure from within a general library or class, this field shows that library or class name. You can change this if needed. If you started this procedure from the global Actions menu, you can choose the parent for this class by clicking and selecting a parent object. If you want to create an orphan object (no parent), leave this field blank.
Add To Folders To add the class to a folder, click and select a folder.

  3. Click Done.
